Proofreading is the last step in the editing process to make sure it is error free. A proofread will check for grammar, punctuation, misspellings, formatting and more.

Copy editing happens earlier in the writing process, prior to the proofreading stage. A copy edit will check for things like clear sentence structure, inconsistencies and readability.
